Dispersion. Success. The king approaches his temple. It is beneficial to cross the great river. Constancy is beneficial.
The Great Image and Core Spirit
The Hexagram of Dispersion is not simply about “scattering,” but about a necessary dismantling. When old structures, relationships, or attachments have already obstructed the flow of life, Dispersion becomes a path that must be taken. It asks people to first let go of selfish desires and prejudices, breaking up hardened knots so that a new order can arise again.
On the level of self-cultivation, Dispersion teaches one to meet change with humility and openness; on the level of conduct in the world, it shows us that true cohesion comes from shared values rather than forced control; on the level of destiny, it suggests that within crisis there is often the seed of a turning point, and that if one holds to what is right, there will naturally be a chance for reunion within dispersal.
Therefore, the Hexagram of Dispersion is a hexagram of wisdom that teaches “first dissolve, then establish” — dissolution is not the end, but the prelude to renewal.
The Progression of the Six Lines
- First Six · Use a strong horse for rescue. Good fortune.
The first line stands at the beginning of danger, with insufficient strength of its own. Only by relying on outside help can it escape peril. This line emphasizes the importance of following the situation and making good use of available resources in a critical moment.
- Nine in the Second Place · In Dispersion, he hastens to his support. Regret vanishes.
When the situation is slipping out of control, withdrawing from danger in time and preserving one’s foundations can instead prevent regret. This line shows that in knowing when to advance or retreat, decisiveness is what matters.
- Six in the Third Place · He disperses his self. No regret.
One’s own position is unsettled, yet one’s aspiration lies beyond oneself. Though unable to save oneself alone, one may still avoid misfortune through outside aid. It symbolizes letting go of attachment and thereby finding a way forward.
- Six in the Fourth Place · He disperses his group. Supreme good fortune.
By dissolving cliques and breaking private alliances, one can instead gather a greater centripetal force. This line is the turning point of the whole hexagram, symbolizing the great good fortune that comes from fairness and selflessness.
- Nine in the Fifth Place · His loud cries go forth like sweat in dispersion. The king abides without blame.
This is the ruler’s line: it dissolves accumulated ills in a decisive and proper way, like inducing sweat to cure an illness. So long as one holds firmly to the rightful position, there may be upheaval, but in the end there is no disaster.
- Top Nine · He disperses his blood. He goes far away and departs. No blame.
When the situation has run its course, forcing oneself to remain only breeds trouble. Knowing when to withdraw and being able to avoid danger instead brings safety. This is the way of preserving oneself through a timely retreat.
