What This Hexagram Is Saying

Meng. Success. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me. At the first divination, I give counsel. If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. If he importunes, I do not give counsel. Favorable to perseverance.

Meng signifies ignorance not yet opened, yet it holds the potential for progress. Enlightenment should arise from a sincere desire to learn, not from careless, repeated testing. Only by holding fast to what is correct can one gain benefit.

The Great Image and Core Spirit

The Image says: A spring issues forth at the foot of the mountain: Meng. The noble one, through decisive conduct, nurtures virtue.

A spring wells up beneath the mountain, symbolizing wisdom in its first emergence. Observing this, the noble one should cultivate virtue through resolute action, with emphasis on teaching and guidance.

  • Symbolism: ignorance, beginning study, education, enlightenment
  • Characteristics: not yet clear, yet teachable; not yet developed, yet capable of fulfillment
  • Core spirit: enlightenment, uprightness, step-by-step progress

Meng reveals an inevitable stage in the growth of all things: At the beginning there is always ignorance; enlightenment must come first. The key to education lies in method, timing, and moral guidance.

The Progression of the Six Lines

  1. Initial Six: Dispelling ignorance; it is beneficial to use punishment on people

At the start of enlightenment, rules must be established and right and wrong made clear, using negative examples to awaken those still trapped in ignorance.

  2. Nine in the Second Place: Embracing ignorance brings good fortune; taking a wife brings good fortune

Teach with a spirit of tolerance, and when yin and yang are in harmony, the household can be well ordered.

  3. Six in the Third Place: Do not take this woman as a wife; there is no benefit

One whose conduct is not upright should not be engaged with deeply, or harm will result instead of benefit.

  4. Six in the Fourth Place: Entangled in ignorance brings humiliation

Trapped in ignorance, with no way to seek help, one should reflect inwardly and quietly wait for a turn of events.

  5. Six in the Fifth Place: Childlike ignorance brings good fortune

Humbly receiving instruction and learning in accord with the situation, enlightenment applied in the right way brings great good fortune.

  6. Top Nine: Striking against ignorance; beneficial for resisting bandits

Instruction must be firm and decisive, preventing trouble before it arises so that the right Way may be protected.
