Darkening of the Light. Favorable in hardship and steadfastness.

Image and Core Meaning

Darkening of the Light and Progress are inverse paired hexagrams. Progress means light rising above, with the worthy advancing together; Darkening of the Light means light is wounded, and the worthy are oppressed. The Sequence of the Hexagrams says: “When advancing must meet with injury, it is followed by Darkening of the Light.”

This hexagram reveals that when the right way cannot prevail, true wisdom lies not in confrontation, but in preservation.

The Progression of the Six Lines

  1. First Nine

Line text: Darkening of the Light in flight, drooping its wings. The noble one sets out and does not eat for three days. Where he goes, the host has words against him.

Light is wounded, like a bird flying low. The noble one would rather lose salary than lose righteousness. To act at such a time is certain to invite criticism.

Transformed Hexagram: Hexagram 15 · Modesty

  2. Six in the Second Place

Line text: Darkening of the Light, wounded in the left thigh. He uses a strong horse for rescue. Good fortune.

Gentle, yielding, and centered, though harmed, one will in the end receive strong help. By yielding with principle, one can escape danger.

Transformed Hexagram: Hexagram 11 · Peace

  3. Nine in the Third Place

Line text: Darkening of the Light during the southern hunt. He captures their great leader. One must not be hasty. Perseverance is fitting.

One may still accomplish something in the darkness, but must avoid rushing ahead. After victory, one must be all the more careful to remain correct and stop at the right point.

Transformed Hexagram: Hexagram 24 · Return

  4. Six in the Fourth Place

Line text: He enters the left side of the belly, obtains the heart of Darkening of the Light, and leaves through the gate and courtyard.

Seeing clearly the nature of the darkness, one should decisively leave the place of trouble. Withdrawal is not escape, but the preservation of the right way.

Transformed Hexagram: Hexagram 55 · Abundance

  5. Six in the Fifth Place

Line text: Jizi's Darkening of the Light. Favorable in steadfastness.

The sage conceals his brightness and does not display his wisdom. Better to uphold what is right and endure humiliation than to show oneself off and invite disaster.

Transformed Hexagram: Hexagram 63 · After Completion

  6. Top Six

Line text: Not bright, but dark. At first he ascends to heaven, later he enters the earth.

When darkness reaches its extreme, the light will return. What flourishes to the utmost declines; what declines to the utmost flourishes. The Way of Heaven moves in unending cycles.
