Ji Earth Chapter · Di Tian Sui and Destiny Analysis
1. Original Di Tian Sui Text
Ji Earth is humble and moist, balanced and stores.
Not anxious about wood flourishing, nor fear water's tumult.
Fire is scarce and dim, metal is abundant and bright.
If you want things to thrive, assistance and support are
advisable.
2. Annotations
Original note: Ji Earth is low, thin, soft and moist, the place of
Wu Earth’s branches and leaves; it also governs moderation and the
ability to store all things.
Soft earth can generate wood; wood cannot conquer it; thus one
does not worry about wood flourishing;
Deep earth can absorb water; water cannot wash it away; thus it
does not fear water's tumult.
Fire without roots cannot generate damp earth; thus little fire
becomes dim;
Moist earth can nourish the qi of metal; therefore metal is
abundant and shines, clear and lustrous.
This is its subtle use of acting without acting.
To make all things prosper and long-lasting, one must have deep
solid earth and warmth of fire.
3. Ren's Yi Shu Commentary
Ren's I Ching commentary: Ji Earth is a yin moist land, neutral
and stores, extending to all directions and thriving in all
seasons,
with a marvelous use of continuous growth.
Not worried about wood's abundance; its nature is gentle and mild;
wood uses it to nurture, and wood cannot overcome it;
Not afraid of water's tumult; its form is firm and solid; water
can be contained, water does not rush it.
Fire scarce and dim refers to Ding Fire; Yin Earth can restrain
fire, making it dim;
Metal abundant and radiant refers to Xin Metal; Moist soil can
generate metal and moisten it.
The earth qi in the pillar is deep and solid, and with Bing Fire
it removes its yin-damp qi,
further sufficient to generate all things; this is what is meant
by "aid and assistance."
4. Modern Fate Analysis
Ji Earth is humble and moist, balanced and stores.
Ji Earth is Yin Earth, symbolizing fields, fertile soil, wetlands;
its nature is low-key and not ostentatious,
yet it can receive all things and store vitality; it is the most
nourishing earth.
Not worried about wood flourishing:
Ji Earth is gentle and nourishing; wood thrives on it and does not
end up overcoming it,
hence wood thriving is turned to use and does not become its
trouble.
Not afraid of water's tumult:
Ji Earth is thick and capable of absorbing; when water comes, it
stores it, even if abundant it does not overflow,
therefore it does not fear the wildness of water.
Fire scarce and dim:
Damp earth easily accumulates fire qi; fire without roots would be
extinguished;
therefore Ji Earth most needs fire to warm it.
Metal abundant, metal radiance:
Moist earth can generate and moisten metal, making it clear and
lucid;
thus abundant metal reflects its brilliance.
To have things prosper, aid and assistance are
required:
Although Ji Earth has nourishing power, it still needs external
stimulation.
Obtain fire to dispel dampness and cold, obtain help to realize
its power; only then can all things become abundant and
long-lasting.
In summary, the value of Ji Earth lies in
"gentle, moist, storing, generating."
Fire is the primary useful deity, to help warm and nurture;
the earth is deep and not arid; all things generate and continue
to grow without end.
