Geng Metal carries Sha; firmness and vigor are supreme.
With water it becomes clear, with fire it becomes sharp.
Moist earth yields growth, dry earth becomes brittle.
It can overpower Jia Wood, but loses to Yi Wood.
2. Original Annotations
Original note: Geng Metal is the Taibai of the heavens, bearing
Sha and being firm and vigorous.
When tempered by water, its qi flows clear; when tempered by fire,
its qi is pure and sharp.
Earth with water can sustain its life; earth with fire makes it
brittle.
Jia Wood may be strong, able to strike it down; Yi Wood though
soft, when allied becomes weak.
3. Ren's Yi Book Explanation
Ren's Yi Book: Geng is the autumnal, austere qi; firmness is the
pinnacle.
Those who obtain water to become clear are Ren Water; Ren Water
arises, channels the nature of rigidity and killing, thus feeling
tempered and crystalline.
Those who obtain fire to become sharp are Ding Fire; Ding Fire is
yin and gentle, does not oppose Geng Metal; well-smelted and
refined, it forms swords and halberds; in the great furnace
tempered, the edge is sometimes revealed on the anvil.
Born in spring and summer, its qi is somewhat weak; when it
encounters the damp earth of Chou and Chen, it grows; when it
encounters the dry earth of Wei and Xu, it becomes brittle.
Jia Wood is a true foe; its strength can vanquish it; allied with
Yi it seems to have sentiment.
Yi is not completely allied with Geng to aid aggression; Geng is
not completely allied with Yi to become weak; this requires
careful discernment.
4. Modern Fate Analysis
Geng Metal with Sha, firmness is paramount.
Geng Metal is Yang Metal, symbolizing knives, swords, axes, and mineral metal; its nature is fierce and decisive, carrying the power of sternness and execution, most capable of breakthroughs and resolution.
With water to become clear:
Water can refine the impurities of Geng Metal, making its sharp
edge inwardly restrained and not muddy; there is clarity within
firmness, majesty without brutality.
With fire to become sharp:
Fire is the forging to make it. It can make Geng Metal into tools
and blades.
Ding Fire is especially good; tempering the hard with a soft fire,
beneficial without destroying.
Moist soil yields life, dry soil yields
brittleness:
Wet soil hides metal, can nourish its body; dry soil, when it sees
metal, makes it brittle. Therefore Geng Metal dislikes dry and
arid soil.
Can overpower Jia Wood, but loses to Yi
Wood:
Geng Metal against Jia Wood is a proper克; hard over hard, its
power can vanquish it; against Yi Wood, hardness and softness
blend, and it easily forms attachment; if not restrained, it will
damage its hard and vigorous foundation.
In summary, the use of Geng Metal lies in its "refining."
Water to purify, Fire to forge, Earth to nourish; only then can it
transform killing into power, and hardness into a tool.
